Serhan, Ph.D., D.Sc.Charles is the Simon Gelman Professor of Anaesthesia (Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology) at Harvard Medical School. He is Director of the Center for Experimental Therapeutics and Reperfusion Injury and Distinguished Scientist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and recently a Co-Director of the Brigham Research Institute. Charles received a BS in biochemistry from Stony Brook University followed by a Doctorate in experimental pathology and medical sciences from New York University School of Medicine. He was a visiting scientist and post-doctoral fellow at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm with Professor Bengt Samuelsson (Nobel Laurate Medicine 82). He attended the Nobel Ceremony and two of his thesis publications were cited by Samuelsson in his Nobel lecture. In 1987, he joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School and in 1996 received the honorary degree from Harvard University. He’s received many awards including an NIH MERIT award (2000) and has delivered more than 50 keynote and plenary lectures. Among these, 2008 William Harvey Outstanding Scientist Medal, AAAS Fellow 2011. Society for Leukocyte Biology-Bonazinga Award 2010, 2011 American College of Rheumatology Hench Award Lecture at ACR, and Mérieux 2013 Laureate. He received the IUBMB Lecture Medal 2019 and the Ross Prize in Molecular Medicine 2016. 2023 CPPA The Chemistry and Pharmacology of Drug Abuse Award for visionary work and discovery of the Pro-Resolving Mediators from Northeastern Univ.
